THE DARK WAVE Re: Fishing with the Skids

Updated: Jun 17, 2021

This is a copy of the email invite to our first event. I removed the section on covid protocol because it was huge and does not apply right now.

TLDR - You're invited to a birthday party.

It's safe to assume you've seen this.

It follows that you've also seen this.

Do you know who thinks that shit is SOOOOOOO 9 years ago? These guys.

It's unfortunate that the local goths are all meth-heads, but they eventually shift to being generic loadies, and they really grow on you.

The romance/bromance that develops between Stewart and Roald is totes adorbs. They're a good team.

Since shelter-in-place, they haven't been able to loiter and dance behind the bar or next to the dollar store. Stewart and Roald are super bummed that they can't go dancing for their birthdays this year. Doing rips and raving in the basement can't stay fresh forever.

But it turns out there is a place that the freaks and drug addicts are free to roam 24 hours a day every day even during a pandemic - The Vallejo Waterfront. I'm not sure where you thought we were going with this, but this invite is taking a hard left.

It's chill AF in the daytime

But we're going at night so we can get our loiter on.

If you didn't figure out yet, this is for Robert's birthday but we're lumping Becky in too because people weren't ready to come out and play in June. He is a wonderful friend for sharing his birthday. There are other birthdays happening, including but not limited to Mark and David! We are excited to do something resembling nightlife and see some friends. Come hang out for a while even if you're not fishing. Wear whatever makes you feel fabulous that you can also maybe get fish juice on. Bring warm layers. The ground is paved so fancy shoes are ok. Embrace the dystopia. Kill something and eat it

If you want to fish, you don't need a fishing license because the entire waterfront is declared a public pier. Come practice your casting technique and maybe go home with a fish. Species to target at night include bat ray, leopard shark, and striped bass. The likelihood of catching them follows the same order.

We will have a couple rods, some bait, some swimbaits and jigs, music, and a big piece of cardboard. Wear your goth best, or worst, and join us as we loiter like degens.

How to tie a hi-low rig

You bait it with anchovy or squid (frozen, not canned) and fling it out there with a fairly sturdy pole. You will probably catch a bat ray if anything. They are strong as hell. Really take you for a ride. Use your saltwater gear for this or say goodbye to your rod. It's a proper fight and is pretty fun. They are edible, but most people don't eat them. Here's how to fillet it.

For leopard shark, it's helpful to have a wire leader.

For striped bass, and on lighter rods, there is a very deep rabbit hole for lures and artificials.

It would be great if you can confirm if you're coming or not. Send questions to Robert or Becky so we don't have a big email thread that people end up ignoring. We hope to see all of you there and we're excited for our first weird art party in 6 months!

-Becky and Robert
